First of all, I have just received a text that Ellie has made it back to Boston safely. Poor girl had to deal with the terrible ski traffic out of Vermont. Sorry, Kiddo. (I LOVE YOU!)
So this evening I met with Lynn Ann, the fitness specialist, for an assessment. She went over a few questions she had from my paperwork that I had mailed in a few weeks ago. She took my blood pressure (120/70) and resting heart rate (70) and was very happy with both. We discussed my tendency for falling down occasionally (usually with style) and how I blame it on my weak left ankle and she weighed and measured me. No surprises there.
I then visited her intern for some basic physical tests. How many times I could stand up and sit down with my arms crossed in 30 seconds (10), how far I could reach out to my toes while sitting on the ground (don't think I managed to move the stupid little metal thing much further than an inch), and how my balance is with my eyes open (awesome) and closed (not so awesome).
After that was dinner time. Tonight was a really nice grilled chicken breast, green beans, and wild rice and a peach crisp for dessert. It was all delicious.
At 7:00 p, us newbies went down to the gathering room for orientation. There are 16 of us starting today. About 3-4 people have been here before and we are all staying for a different number of weeks. I think there are 3-4 of us who plan to be here for 4 weeks. We went around the room and introduced ourselves and I have definitely traveled the furthest. (I win!) It's nice that there are some ladies who have done this before. They can't speak more highly of the program and like coming back once a year for a 'tune-up'.
Orientation then covered the weekly schedule. Each day has a number of options for us to choose. Some are geared toward your first week (for some, only week) here and others are for when you are ready to move on, but each week will be a little different. The weeks are laid out in the following: Week 1: Foundational Tools; Week 2: Practice; Week 3: Going Deeper/Reflection; Week 4: Personalizing Your Program. You can see the importance of staying a whole month. What's that saying? It takes three weeks to make something a habit? I feel good about my decision to stay the whole 4 weeks.
After our orientation, we had a tour of the building. Luckily, everything is in the same building (because it is snowing like crazy and my snow boots didn't fit in my luggage) except for the pool, but they drive you to that. I am on the second floor with the fitness studio, the dining room and TV lounge are on the first, and the classrooms, weight room, and main lobby are on the ground level. There is no elevator, so I feel like I have already gotten a nice workout from going up and down those stairs all evening!
I did already go to the bookstore to purchase a green mountain tee shirt that was on sale. I figured I could use another workout shirt...and it was on sale!
My roommate is very nice. Like I said before, her name is Julia. She is from the South but has been in DC for 5 years. She is 33 and I think we will get along great. Someone already asked us if we were related or were friends before today. I responded with, "Nope, but we have been BFFs for five hours!" She also has a cat, a boyfriend of many years, and blog for her family and friends. :0) She will only be here for 2 weeks (sad) as she is a nurse and could only get 2 weeks off of work.
Okay, this post is long. So I will publish this one and start another to tell you about my schedule for tomorrow.
